Equitas lets you select the categories the 5X rate applies to, and everything else earns 2 reward points per Rs. 100. That is the card's whole argument: instead of hoping the issuer's fixed category list matches your spending, you point the accelerated rate at where your money already goes.
The six that earn nothing on every Equitas card: fuel, rent, wallet loads, government payments, cash advances and EMI conversions. That constrains the choice meaningfully — for a household whose largest card-payable items are rent and fuel, the flexibility is worth less than it sounds.
Nothing in the first year. From year two it is Rs. 1,000 plus GST, waived on Rs. 2,40,000 of spending — about Rs. 20,000 a month. Below that level the fee is payable, and at that point the Tiga at a flat Rs. 500 with no waiver is the cheaper card to hold.
The Selfe if you spend around Rs. 20,000 a month or more and want to point a 5X rate at your own categories — the fee disappears and the base rate is double. The Tiga if your spending is lower or mostly UPI: Rs. 500 a year flat, and its 3X on UPI and contactless is a category the Selfe does not single out.
Yes. Equitas issues a secured version of the Selfe against a fixed deposit, as it does for its whole range. That means a thin or absent credit file does not push you down to an entry card — you can hold this one with a deposit instead of an income assessment.
Equitas does not publish a rupee value, which is why we quote point counts rather than percentages here. Without the conversion a 5X rate cannot be compared against a cashback card's percentage, so ask the bank for the current redemption rate before choosing on the reward rate.
Most reward cards fix their categories and leave you to hope the list matches your spending. The Selfe inverts that: you choose where the 5X rate applies, and everything else earns 2 reward points per Rs. 100.
That base rate matters as much as the headline. At 2 points per Rs. 100 it is double the Tiga's, so the card is not relying entirely on the chosen categories to be worth holding — spending that falls outside them still earns at twice the rate of Equitas's entry card.
Fuel, rent, wallet loads, government payments, cash advances and EMI conversions earn nothing on any Equitas card, and they cannot be chosen as a 5X category either.
For many households that removes the two largest card-payable items from consideration before the choosing starts. The flexibility is real but it operates inside a narrower space than it first appears, so it is worth listing your own categories and striking out the excluded ones before deciding whether this card beats a fixed-category one.
Year one is free outright. From year two it is Rs. 1,000 plus GST, waived on Rs. 2,40,000 of spending — about Rs. 20,000 a month, which a household using the card as its main one will clear.
Below that level the comparison flips. Equitas's own Tiga costs a flat Rs. 500 with no waiver to chase, so a lighter spender pays less by taking the cheaper card and accepting its 1-point base. The Selfe is worth its fee at roughly Rs. 20,000 a month and not much below it.
