Guide and common questions
Everything worth knowing before you choose. All of it is on this page — open only what you need.
1. Why the best card depends on your spending, not on the rankings
1 min read
Every "best card" list, including ours, ranks cards against an assumed basket. Change the basket and the order changes with it. A card paying 10% on food delivery inside a Rs. 1,500 monthly cap beats a flat 1.5% card for somebody who orders constantly, and loses to it for somebody who spends on groceries, fuel and rent. Nothing about the card changed — only whose statement it was being measured against.
That is what this tool settles. It takes your own categorised spending and prices every card we track against it, with the monthly cap applied, the excluded categories removed, and the annual fee netted off. The answer it gives is specific to you, which is why it can disagree with the ranked lists on this site — and when it does, it is the one to trust.
2. What a bank’s own spend analyser will not tell you
1 min read
Most Indian banks have a spend analyser inside their app, and it is useful for one thing: showing you where the money went. What it cannot do is compare — it knows one card, the one you already hold, and it has no interest in telling you that a different issuer would have paid you more on the same spending. That comparison is the whole point of doing this outside your bank.
3. The three things that decide the answer
1 min read
Caps, not rates. Almost every accelerated rate in India is bounded per statement cycle. A 10% rate capped at Rs. 400 pays at most Rs. 4,800 a year; a 5% rate capped at Rs. 2,000 pays Rs. 24,000.
Exclusions. Rent, fuel, wallet loads, EMI conversions and often UPI earn nothing on most cards. If a large share of your month sits in those categories, the headline rate is measuring spending you do not do.
The fee against the waiver. A Rs. 999 fee waived at Rs. 2,00,000 of annual spending costs nothing to somebody who spends that and Rs. 999 to somebody who does not.
Nothing you paste is sent anywhere. The categorisation and the pricing happen in your browser, and nothing is stored unless you have an account and choose to save the analysis.
4. Frequently Asked Questions
4 questions answered
How do I find the best credit card for my spending?+
Price your own spending against each card rather than reading a ranking. Take a month of real spending, split it by category, and apply each card’s rate, monthly cap, exclusions and annual fee to it. The card that returns most on your basket is rarely the one at the top of a general list, because that list was built on somebody else’s basket.
Is this credit card spend analyser free, and is my statement safe?+
Free, and no account is needed. The categorisation and the pricing run in your browser — the statement is not uploaded anywhere, and nothing is stored unless you have an account and choose to save the result.
How is this different from the spend analyser in my bank’s app?+
A bank’s analyser shows where your money went on the card you already hold. It cannot tell you that another issuer would have paid you more on the same spending, because it only knows one card. This prices your spending against every card we track.
How much spending do I need to analyse for a useful answer?+
One typical month is enough to get the shape right. Two or three months is better if your spending swings — a festive month or a holiday will overweight categories you do not spend on all year, and a card chosen on that month will underpay for the other eleven.
