HDFC credit card interest rates

Seven of HDFC’s eight cards publish a monthly finance charge. The eighth, PhonePe HDFC Uno, points at HDFC’s Most Important Terms and Conditions instead of stating one.

• 3.5% a month — 42% a year. Swiggy BLCK HDFC Bank. The cheapest HDFC rate, and in the cheapest tier in our whole catalogue.
• 3.6% a month — 43.2% a year. Shoppers Stop Black HDFC Bank.
• Up to 3.75% a month — 45% a year. Pixel, MoneyBack Plus, IRCTC and Biz First, plus HDFC Shoppers Stop.

Note the words "up to". On five of these cards the rate varies by usage and repayment history, which means the published figure is the ceiling and a clean payment record can earn a lower one. It also means a poor record keeps you at the top.

On Rs. 50,000 revolved for a full year, compounding monthly:

• 3.5% a month — about Rs. 25,500 of interest.
• 3.75% a month — about Rs. 27,800.

So the spread across HDFC’s whole range is roughly Rs. 2,300 a year on Rs. 50,000 — much smaller than the Rs. 25,500 you pay either way. The rate is not the lever. Not revolving is.

Which is why choosing an HDFC card on its interest rate is almost always the wrong decision: the Rs. 2,300 difference is dwarfed by the reward difference between the cards, and both are dwarfed by what revolving costs at all.

Five HDFC cards publish an interest-free period:

• 55 days — HDFC Biz First. The longest HDFC offers, and on supplier payments that extra fortnight is the entire point of the card.
• 50 days — PhonePe Uno, Swiggy BLCK, IRCTC, HDFC Shoppers Stop. The Indian standard.

Pixel, MoneyBack Plus and Shoppers Stop Black publish nothing, which is unknown rather than short.

The published figure is the maximum, available only on a purchase made at the start of a billing cycle. A purchase on the last day of the cycle gets only the grace period, usually 15 to 20 days. Three mechanics, and the third is the one that surprises people:

Interest runs from the transaction date, not from the statement date or the due date, once a balance revolves.

It is charged on the average daily balance, so a part payment on the 10th reduces interest for the rest of the month rather than clearing it.

Paying the minimum due ends the grace period on new purchases. This is the expensive one. The minimum keeps your account current and your credit score intact, which is why it feels safe — but from that month, everything you buy accrues interest from the day you buy it until the entire balance is cleared in full. A 5% rewards card charging 45% on a revolved balance is losing money every month.

An ATM withdrawal on an HDFC card is charged interest from the moment the money leaves the machine, plus a flat fee of 2.5% to 3% with a minimum near Rs. 500.

Rs. 20,000 withdrawn and repaid in thirty days costs roughly Rs. 500 to Rs. 600 in fee and about Rs. 750 in interest — Rs. 1,250 to borrow Rs. 20,000 for a month, an effective rate above 75% a year. If you are already carrying a balance on an HDFC card, one phone call is worth more than any card change. Converting a revolving balance to EMI typically moves the rate from 3.5% to 3.75% a month down to 1% to 1.5% a month on a fixed tenure.

On Rs. 50,000 over a year that is roughly Rs. 27,800 of interest revolving against about Rs. 7,000 on a 12-month EMI — a saving of around Rs. 20,800. Banks rarely volunteer it. See best credit cards for EMI, including what no-cost EMI actually charges.

Every one of these costs less than 42% a year:

1. Balance EMI on the same card — 1% to 1.5% a month, one call.
2. A personal loan at 11% to 18% a year, if the amount is large and the tenure longer than a year.
3. A loan against your own fixed deposit, typically 1% to 2% above the FD rate.
4. A balance transfer, which buys a lower rate for a fixed period at a processing fee — read the rate that applies after the period ends.

Each rate is read from the card’s own published terms, and the monthly figure is used rather than the annual one because issuers state the two inconsistently and every issuer publishes the monthly one. "Up to" is reproduced where HDFC uses it, because on those cards the rate genuinely varies with your repayment history. One card publishes no rate and is shown as such rather than assumed.
