Because of the 2% foreign currency markup. Nearly every card in our catalogue charges 3.5%, and the 1.5-point difference is about Rs. 1,770 on every Rs. 1,00,000 spent abroad once GST is added. Roughly Rs. 2,00,000 of foreign spending a year therefore covers the whole fee, before counting the 2,500 renewal Air Miles worth another Rs. 2,500 of travel.
No. International transactions are on Kotak's exclusion list for this card, alongside insurance, education, government, rent, fuel, wallet loading, EMI, online gaming and cash advances. It is the card's sharpest contradiction: the cheapest card here to spend abroad with pays no rewards for doing so. The saving is real, it is just a saving rather than an earning.
Two complimentary international lounge visits and four domestic visits a year, with the domestic allowance capped at two a calendar quarter. The quarterly cap means they cannot be saved for one trip — four visits used in December is not possible.
The Air+ costs Rs. 3,540 against Rs. 1,179, and in return the markup drops from 3.5% to 2%, the travel earn rate rises from 3 to 5 Air Miles per Rs. 100, the base rate from 1 to 2, the welcome and renewal benefit from 1,000 to 2,500 miles, and two international lounge visits are added. If you do not spend abroad, the Air is the better value of the two.
Yes. Accelerated earning is capped at 15,000 Air Miles per statement cycle. At 5 miles per Rs. 100 that is Rs. 3,00,000 of travel booking in one cycle, so it binds only on a large single trip — but it is worth knowing before putting a family's holiday on the card in one go.
No. Redemption covers at most 80% of a booking's value, so at least a fifth has to be paid in cash. The minimum redemption is 200 Air Miles through Kotak Unbox, or 1,000 miles if you are transferring to an airline or hotel partner.
