In year one on Rs. 20,000 of spending within 90 days of card set-up, which is easy. From year two it is waived on Rs. 8,00,000 of spending in a card year — about Rs. 67,000 a month. That is the single most important figure on this card and it is twenty times the threshold on AU's cheaper Altura.
For most people, the Altura. It costs Rs. 199 against Rs. 499, its year-two waiver needs Rs. 40,000 of spending against Rs. 8,00,000, and it pays 2% on groceries, departmental stores and utility bills against the Plus's 1.5% flat. The Plus only wins if your annual spending is genuinely near Rs. 8 lakh, at which point the fee disappears and the flat rate applies to all of it.
1.5% cashback with 2X reward points on retail spending, credited against the statement rather than held as points to redeem. It is a flat rate with no accelerated category, which makes it simple — but the Altura's 2% on three household categories is higher where most spending actually falls.
No. Like the Altura it gives eight complimentary railway lounge visits a year and no airport lounge access at all. The lounge allowance is identical on both cards, so it is not a reason to pay the higher fee.
AU publishes a 3.49% foreign currency markup on this variant, which is at the market standard. AU's own ixigo AU card is lifetime free and charges 0.99%, so for foreign spending that is the card to hold from this issuer rather than either Altura.
3.75% a month, or 45% a year, on revolving credit, with the interest-free period running up to 50 days if the bill is paid in full and not applying to cash withdrawals. Late payment is 15% of the total amount due, minimum Rs. 10 and maximum Rs. 1,300, plus GST.
AU waives the Altura Plus fee in year one on Rs. 20,000 of spending within 90 days, which almost anybody clears. From year two it waives it on Rs. 8,00,000 of spending in a card year — about Rs. 67,000 a month.
Set that next to AU's own Altura, where the year-two waiver is Rs. 40,000. The Plus asks twenty times as much spending to remove a fee that is two and a half times larger. For anybody not spending near Rs. 8 lakh a year, the Plus is a card with an annual bill and the Altura is a card without one.
Less than the price suggests. The lounge allowance is identical — eight railway visits a year on both, no airport access on either. The fuel surcharge waiver is the same 1% across India. The foreign currency markup is the same 3.49%.
The difference is the reward structure: a flat 1.5% with 2X reward points against the Altura's 2% on groceries, departmental stores and utility bills plus 1% elsewhere. So the Plus pays more on spending outside those three categories and less inside them — and for most households, inside them is where the money goes.
At genuinely high spending. If you put Rs. 8 lakh a year through the card, the fee disappears and a flat 1.5% applies to all of it, including the categories the Altura only pays 1% on. At that level the Plus returns Rs. 12,000 a year against the Altura's split rate, and the fee is nil.
Below that it is a worse version of a cheaper card. The honest reading is that this is not a mid-tier card so much as a high-spend variant of an entry one, and AU's own pricing makes the choice for you at about Rs. 67,000 a month.
