Eight cards in CredSpy's catalogue advertise a nil or zero joining fee. Only three waive the annual fee for life as well. The gap is where most second-year fee surprises come from.

CredSpy Data Desk — an analysis of the 40 credit cards currently listed on CredSpy, read from each issuer's published fee documentation.
What we found
Reviewing the fee structure of all 40 cards in our live catalogue, 8 carry a nil or zero joining fee. Only 3 are genuinely lifetime free — meaning both the joining fee and the annual fee are waived for as long as the account stays open.
The three are the HSBC RuPay Platinum Credit Card, the SBM Novio Credit Card and the RoarBank RuPay Credit Card.
Why the gap matters
The remaining five zero-joining-fee cards behave differently at renewal. The first-year charge is waived, but an annual fee falls due on the first anniversary unless the cardholder clears a spend threshold in the preceding year. For someone who applied on the strength of a “no joining fee” headline, that is an unexpected charge twelve months later.
The distinction is visible only in the Key Fact Statement or MITC, where the annual fee line is stated separately from the joining fee line. Marketing pages routinely compress the two into a single claim.
What lifetime free does not remove
On all three cards, interest on revolved balances, late payment charges, cash advance fees, foreign currency mark-up and GST apply exactly as they would on a fee-charging card. Lifetime free is a statement about two specific fees, not about the cost of using the card.
What to check
- Whether the annual fee line shows an amount with a waiver condition — if so, the card is conditionally free, not lifetime free.
- Whether the status applies to the specific variant you are applying for; secured and unsecured versions often differ.
- Whether lifetime-free status is a launch offer tied to an application cut-off date.
