An SBI credit card is the most common first card in India, and SBI Card has the widest range on this site: 28 cards, with annual fees from Rs. 300 to Rs. 4,999. The line-up splits into co-brands (IRCTC, Paytm, Ola, Tata Neu, Fabindia, Flipkart, BPCL, Etihad, Aditya Birla), plain rewards cards (SimplyCLICK, SimplySAVE), a flat cashback card, and premium travel and dining cards (PRIME, ELITE, Miles).

The waiver is where the premium cards get expensive: ELITE and Miles Prime need Rs. 10,00,000 of annual spending to reverse the fee, and Miles Elite Rs. 15,00,000 — figures most cardholders will not reach.

SBI reverses the renewal fee once your spending in the card year crosses the card's threshold:

A few cards publish no waiver at all, including both IRCTC cards, Paytm SBI, Aditya Birla SBI and the Central SBI cards. On those, the fee is charged every year whatever you spend.

SBI pays in Reward Points on most cards and in cashback on a few, and the two are not comparable at face value:

An SBI Reward Point is usually worth about Rs. 0.25, so 10 points per Rs. 100 is roughly 2.5% back, and 25 points per Rs. 100 on fuel is about 6% — the strongest fuel rate on this site.

Reward Points also expire — commonly 24 months after they are earned. Points left in the account past that are worth nothing, so redeem in batches rather than saving for a large reward.

Most visits unlock only after a minimum spend in the previous quarter, so a card bought for the lounge still has to be used to keep it.

SBI publishes an income figure for only a few cards: Rs. 35,000 for PRIME, Rs. 50,000 for Miles Prime and Rs. 75,000 for Miles Elite. For the rest, approval is decided on your credit profile rather than a stated salary.

In practice, SBI looks for a credit score around 700 to 750 on its rewards cards and higher on the premium ones. Existing SBI account holders are approved more readily, and a card issued against a fixed deposit is an option for anyone with no credit history.

The annual fee is the charge people compare, and rarely the one that costs most. Pay less than the full statement balance and interest applies from the transaction date, and the interest-free period stops applying to new purchases until the balance is cleared.

Paid in full every month, a SBI card costs only its annual fee. Revolved, the interest outruns any reward rate on the card several times over.
