1. Fuel credit cards in India

Fuel credit cards exist because most Indian cards exclude fuel from rewards entirely. Two are tracked here, both SBI BPCL co-brands, at Rs. 499 and Rs. 1,499 a year.

Two separate benefits get confused. The surcharge waiver refunds the 1% fee petrol pumps add to card payments, and nearly every card gives it. Earning on fuel is rare, and that is what a fuel card is for.

2. What makes a good fuel credit card

It earns on fuel, not just waives the surcharge.
It works at the pumps you use. A BPCL card earns its top rate at BPCL stations, not at HP or Indian Oil.
The monthly cap. The surcharge waiver is usually capped at Rs. 100 to Rs. 250 a cycle, which covers roughly Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 25,000 of fuel.
The fee against your actual fuel spend. At 5% value back, a Rs. 1,499 fee needs about Rs. 30,000 of fuel a year to break even.

SBI BPCL Octane pays 25 points per Rs. 100, about 6.25%, the strongest fuel rate on this site.
Everywhere else, both drop to a base rate of about 1 point per Rs. 100.

The accelerated rate applies at the co-brand's own pumps. Fuel bought elsewhere earns the base rate, and on most non-fuel cards, nothing at all.
