Best credit cards for food delivery

This is the whole reason this page is separate from our dining credit cards list. When you pay a restaurant directly, the transaction carries a restaurant merchant category code. When you pay inside Swiggy or Zomato, it usually carries a food delivery or aggregator code instead — and most Indian cards pay different rates on the two.

So a card advertising 10% on dining can pay 1% on the order you place from your sofa. Thirty-five cards in our catalogue qualify on restaurant terms; eleven name delivery or the apps themselves, and those eleven are this list.

If most of your food spending is delivery rather than sit-down, the dining list is the wrong list.

• Kotak Cashback Plus and Kotak Cashback+ — the strongest on this list, paying an accelerated rate that covers delivery apps rather than restaurants only, with a Rs. 750 fee waived on normal spending.
• Swiggy BLCK HDFC Bank — built around the app. The highest rate on Swiggy of anything in the catalogue, and the trade-off is a Rs. 1,00,000 monthly income requirement and a 60-year age limit.
• PhonePe HDFC Uno — a Rs. 499 card with a Rs. 1,00,000 waiver threshold and delivery among its accelerated categories. The cheapest sensible entry here.
• SBI Cashback — 5% on all online spends, which includes delivery apps without any category gymnastics. Often the simplest answer.
• HSBC RuPay Cashback and RBL Bank Cookies — mid-tier options, and the HSBC card is RuPay, so it also links to UPI.

Every accelerated category on an Indian credit card has a monthly ceiling, and on food delivery the ceilings are low because the spend is frequent and small. The pattern:

• A 10% rate capped at Rs. 100 a month is worth Rs. 1,200 a year, no matter how much you order. You hit it at Rs. 1,000 of spend.
• A 5% rate capped at Rs. 500 a month is worth Rs. 6,000 a year, and you hit it at Rs. 10,000 of spend.

So the headline rate is almost never the right comparison. Multiply the cap by twelve and compare that against the fee — it is the only number that tells you what the card is worth to you. If you order Rs. 6,000 a month, a 5% rate capped at Rs. 300 beats a 10% rate capped at Rs. 100.

• Paying from a wallet. Loading Swiggy Money or Zomato Money from the card is a wallet load, which almost every issuer excludes from rewards and from the fee-waiver threshold. Pay the order directly on the card each time.
• Small orders below a minimum transaction value. Several cards pay nothing under Rs. 100 or Rs. 150, and delivery orders frequently fall below it.
• Dining-out exclusions in reverse. A few cards exclude aggregators from their dining category explicitly. Read the exclusion list, not the headline.
• App-side gold or membership charges are usually treated as a separate merchant and earn the base rate, not the accelerated one.

Worth saying plainly, because it decides the order of operations. A 40% app coupon on a Rs. 500 order saves Rs. 200. A 5% card reward on the same order earns Rs. 25.

So the app offer comes first and the card second — and the two are often stackable: apply the coupon, then pay the reduced amount on the card that pays the best rate. Where they are not stackable, because the offer is bank-specific and requires a particular card, take the larger number. It is nearly always the app discount.

The corollary: do not choose a credit card for food delivery if delivery is a small part of your spending. Choose it for your largest category and let delivery earn the base rate.

Swiggy BLCK HDFC Bank pays the best Swiggy rate in the catalogue. It also asks for Rs. 1,00,000 of monthly income and carries a real fee — so the question is whether your delivery spend justifies a card tied to one app.

The arithmetic: a co-brand card paying, say, 8 percentage points more than a general card needs Rs. 12,500 of annual app spend per Rs. 1,000 of fee just to break even. Below roughly Rs. 4,000 a month of ordering, a general 5% online card like SBI Cashback returns more net of fee and works everywhere else too.

And a co-brand card locks you to one app. Delivery-app discounting in India moves constantly; a general card follows your spending wherever it goes.

Delivery is rarely anybody's largest category, so the card that wins here should usually be your second card, not your first:

• Best cashback credit cards — if a flat rate across everything suits you better than category chasing.
• Best credit cards for groceries — the larger food category for most households.
• Best credit cards for dining — for restaurant bills paid in person, where the rates are genuinely higher.
• Best credit cards for online shopping — many delivery-friendly cards are online-spend cards.

A card qualifies only if it names a delivery app or food delivery itself in its own product terms — its title, category, reward tag, reward lines or the headline of a published benefit. Restaurant and dining wording does not qualify a card here, which is the point: the whole query exists because the restaurant rate often does not apply inside the app. Eleven of sixty-nine qualify, against thirty-five on the dining list.
